Our Saints' Hall of Fame
These are just a few of our favorite soldiers of the past.
Preachers
George Whitefield (1714-1770)
One of the greatest open-air preachers ever! Started out with
aspirations to be an actor but God called him to the ministry. Learned the value of open
air preaching from a Welsh preacher. Ole George would go down to the coal fields in England and
preach to thousands. These open air meetings grew to unbelievable crowds. Whitefield was the
originator of animation in the pulpit due to his acting influences. Benjamin Franklin documented that George
could be heard for a half of a mile from the Boston Commons where George was preaching! His life
and journal is great reading. When it came to really "belting it out" with power and energy nobody
could out preach George Whitefield. "George Whitefiel's Journals" is a must read. This book can be found at:
Soverign Grace Publications.
Also, a great link to learn more about George Whitefiled can be found at:

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892)
One of the greatest pulpiteers ever! Charles sat under his father and grandfather
and learned the great doctrines early on. Spurgeon began full time ministry at the age of 19 and even then
his great skill at preaching was being noticed. CH Spurgeon had a great grasp of the scriptures and the
English language. His gift of illustration is unsurpassed. If you want to be a preacher you need to read Spurgeon.
If you just want to grow in your Christian life then read Spurgeon. He worked tirelessly and suffered great pain througout
his life. His books

Missionaries
David Brainerd
(1718-1747)
For those of you who think you are sold out for God or you a true "witness" for the Lord then you read the
"Diary of David Brainerd" and then get back with me and tell me just how soldout you are!!!
David Brainerd was one of the earliest of true missionaries. Preached unselfishly at the expense of his own life
for the souls of the Ameridan Indians fo the Northeast. Brainerd was asked to leave college due to an issue so
he went off to be a missionary to the american Indians under the Scotland Missionary society. David got sick with
consumtion of the lungs, stayed sick but faithfully went to the Indians. Brainerd died before his 30th birthday.
But due to Jonathan Edwards' faithfulness David Brainerd's diaries were published and oh my what an affect
it had on the hearts of men. His life was short but the effects of his life are immeasruable for many a saint was
called to the mission field due to Brainerd's short life.
Going to
"The Discerning Reader" and order the book - absolute must reading.
John Paton
(1824-1907)
Missionary to the New Hepredis - the land of cannibals.
Paton got a burden for the south Pacific cannibals! The island he wanted to go to was recently visited by
two missionaries who were attacked and eaten after they set foot on Tawara. So where did Paton go?
Well of course, he went to Tarawa! Talk about an exciting life - you just have to read it to believe it!!!
He lost his wife and child the first few weeks there due to sickness. His life was threatened no less than 30 times.
Eventually fled for his life with nothing left. But he returned and they were still cannibals. But when he finally left
years later they were all Christians! One of the great missionaries of all time. A man who truly understood
the sovereignty of God!!!

"Wholesome Words" to read about this great missionary!
Pastors
Jonathan Edwards
(1703-1758)
The greatest and most influencial of American theoligans.
If all you've heard of this man are the whinings from colledge professors about his "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"
then you have an incomplete education of the man. A brilliant mind, a humble heart, gifted writer, disciplined man - the complete Christian.
This is the man that was instrumental in the start ofthe "Great Awakening".
A great site to learn about this great saint and preacher can be found at
Jonathan Edwards.com. Go and feast!!! By the way - give his "Resolves"
a reading and then see how you manage your time compared to Jonathan Edwards.
John Newton
(1725-1807)
Many know Newton only as the writer of that great hymn, "Amazing Grace".
Started out a wicked and vile slave trader. Newton was so wicked his own men had him thrown of his own ship!!!!
There was none wickeder no not one! During a storm God broke his heart saved his soul. Later John Newton
became one of the most gentle and gacious pastors of people ever. He was also a pretty good hymn writer.
His biography,
"Through Many Dangers and Toils, the Story of John Newton" by Brian Edwards is a great book.

Great Women
Susanna Wesley
(1669 - 1742)
A Mother Who Made A Difference - for you ladies who think you've had it hard with two children.
This lady not only bore 19 children but spent quality time with each of them. The fruits of her faithfulness included the great preacher,
John Wesley. By the way - for you couples who decided that you didn't want that one ore child - What if
Mrs. Wesley thought like many of you? If she had then she would not have had her 18th the the world would have
missed out on one of the greatest hymnists of all time, Charles Wesley.

Lady Selina Shirley Huntington
(1707-1797)
This great Chrisitan lady used the money God had blessed her with
and helped support great preachers and many ministries. Closely involved for nearly forty years with the leaders of the burgeoning
Methodist movement, she gave herself unstintingly to the cause of Christ. She contributed sacrificially to the construction of sixtyfour chapels,
the opening of many other places of worship, and the founding of Trevecca College in Wales. Her greatest benefactor was the preacher
George Whitfield. If only our rich folks today would be half as generous as Lady Huntington.
Read a great book about this great lady at
Grace and Truth Books.
Writers
Thomas Watson
(1620-1686)
Thomas Watson was a man of considerrable learning,
a popular but judicious preacher, and eminent gift of prayer. He is one of the most popular of all the English Puritans and, many say,
one of the most readable. Watson pastored at St. Stephen's Wallbrook in London.
"All Things for Good"
and
"The Mischief of Sin" are classics!.
A good site to learn about Thamas Watson is

John Bunyan
(1828-1688)
My personal favorite - a man with little formal education, no Greek or Hebrew
but oh my, look what this man produced.
"Pilgrim's Progress" is still one of the greatest works
other than the Bible itself. A man with a keen understanding of the Chrisitian life. Many great preachers of the past made "Pilgrim's Progress"
a part of their regular reading due to the vast content of rich Christian material. In his wrestlings over his salvation God was
preparing man to instruct many after him on the subject of the aspects of the salvation and the practical Christian life.
His works have been graciously provided for at the
